The German government has launched a major social reform with the Citizen's Income. It replaced unemployment benefit II on 1 January 2023.
The Citizen's Income was introduced in two stages. In a first step, the standard benefit rates will be increased at the beginning of 2023 and a de minimis limit will be introduced. In a second step, the core elements for further training and qualifications will be introduced in mid-2023.
The main aim is to ensure that people on basic income support are better qualified and can therefore be placed in jobs on a permanent basis. In addition, the calculation of standard requirements will be placed on a new basis.
The new Fact sheet SGB II on the citizen's allowance offers you comprehensive information.

The housing benefit calculator of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building can be used to roughly check whether your needs and income situation could lead to an entitlement to social benefits and, if so, whether an application for housing benefit (Housing Benefit Office of the City of Leipzig) or citizen's allowance (Leipzig Job Centre) should be submitted (see under "Links" top right).
